Many of us have been blessed with those “special boxers”. You know----that special one that took
your heart and bonded with your soul the moment your eyes met. That was my Chip! He was
born into my hands in my first litter of boxers. When I first saw him I instantly knew he was
my “special one”. From the moment of his birth he was bonded with my heart. He will
always remain there.
It has been difficult adjusting to the absence of his physical presence. When you’ve
had a constant companion for 10 years you keep expecting him to come around the corner.
When you wake up at night you wonder why it’s so quiet. . Then as consciousness takes hold
you realize that comforting drone of a sleeping boxer is not there. But I think what I miss the
most is his not being here to “discuss” my thoughts with.
. All of you know how our beloved friends listen attentively to us,
and reflect back in their loving brown eyes the deepest feelings of our inner being.
I have been blessed with a wonderful grandson of Chip’s. Now that I’ve been through the worst
part of grieving I hope I can open my heart back up to love this puppy as he deserves.
I told my dear friend, Donna, when I bred this litter I hoped for a male puppy to ease the
pain when I had to let Chip go. Our beloved “Cody”, Ch. Schmidttadd’s Rhinestone Cowboy,
obliged his grandma and sired 4 males for me. Just as with his grandpa Chip, I knew “JR”
was “my special boy” the moment he was born. I JUST KNOW he was sent special delivery
to me looking like a duplicate of Chip.
I now am able to rejoice at all the joy Chip brought into my life. I know that is how he would want
me to feel. He hated to see me sad. Chip was my first of many things. He was from my first
boxer litter. He was my first boxer to earn a CGC. AND he was my first champion.
Oh what a joy that was ! For any that would like to read the account Ann Gilbert
wrote a wonderful article in the Boxer Review of January 1997,page 50, about Chip finishing,
the exhilaration of a first champion, and general good sportsmanship. It also brings me much joy
to know that every person who owns one of Chip’s sons knows what a special boxer
they have. Chip passed on to all his get, but especially his sons—and looks like grandsons,
a tremendous capacity to love their humans. I can see parts of Chip in these wonderful traits
of his offspring. I also feel blessed in seeing the physical likeness of Chip in some of his
offspring, and now even his grandson. But what will continue to keep Chip alive most is
when I look into the eyes of any of his get and can see the depth of Chip’s soul reflecting back.
As my final gift to you “MY BIG BOY” I let you leave this world with my love and your dignity
